The gypsy moths have arrived at Big Oak Ridge.
Several years ago we had a major infestation of gypsy moths that nearly killed our giant oak tree. We had to wrap all our specimen oaks in aluminum foil coated with petroleum jelly; we barely saved the trees.
Gypsy moths are the kind of creature that experiences periodic population collapses. They go along, gradually building in numbers, year after year, until they hit a peak; then the population collapses and the cycle starts over again.
The moths are laying their eggs now, so the population explosion will occur next spring.
We will be ready with aluminum foil, duct tape, and petroleum jelly, to help “manage’ this parasitic population explosion.
