2009.02.22 The Sacraments part 2

Continuing the discussion on the sacraments (might want to think about the homework from the last session).
We covered Salvation and Water Baptism. We rehearsed our working definition of sacraments, and discussed how salvation and baptism might fit that model. here are the notes:

1. Salvation
Action: Believe and confess.
Promise or Result: Eternal life
Prophesied or forshadowed:
The examples of salvation, including Noah, Joseph, Moses, etc. are well known to us.
The direct, precise prophecies regarding Jesus Christ, his life, death, and resurrection are too numerous to review here.
Just a few of the prophecies regarding salvation:
Exo 15:2 The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
1Ch 16:23 Sing to Jehovah, all the earth. Show forth from day to day His salvation.
Isa 25:9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation
Isa 49:1-7 (Read this)
Isa 62:11 Behold, Jehovah has sent a message to the end of the earth, Tell the daughter of Zion, Behold, your salvation comes. Behold, His reward is with Him, and His work before Him.
Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
Jer 17:14 Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.
… and the prophecy of Zacharias:
Luk 1:67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,
Luk 1:68 Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people
Luk 1:69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David,
Luk 1:70 as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from eternity;
Luk 1:71 that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us,
Luk 1:72 to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember His holy covenant,
Luk 1:73 the oath which He swore to our father Abraham,
Luk 1:74 that He would grant to us, that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear
Luk 1:75 in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.
1Pe 1:9 obtaining the end of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
1Pe 1:10 About which salvation the prophets sought out and searched out, prophesying concerning the grace for you;
1Pe 1:11 searching for what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ made clear within them, testifying beforehand of the sufferings of Christ, and the glories that should follow.
1Pe 1:12 To them it was revealed that not to themselves, but to us, they ministered the things which are now reported to you by those who have preached the gospel to you in the Holy Spirit sent from Heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
Note that many people may be “converted”, that is, they believe that God is, and they believe that Jesus is, but they are not saved – that is, they do not believe IN God, or do not ACCEPT Jesus Christ and all he lived and died for; perhaps they do not acknowledge their sin, or their need for a savior, or they give mental assent without commitment, etc. (see “marriage”).
